A traditional SAP ECC landscape contains three systems: development, quality assurance and production. Each is used for specific purposes, and normally only the production system needs to be on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Development and quality assurance systems frequently only need to be used between the hours of 8am and 6pm. Using the AWS cloud infrastructure, we can configure your development and quality assurance systems to power on automatically at 8am and power off again at 6pm to reduce your costs.
On-premise backup solutions are frequently a cause of concern for companies running SAP. The heavy cost of software licenses and the difficulty of configuring the software to function in a robust and reliable manner causes managers and directors alike sleepless nights. Hosting your SAP systems on the AWS cloud platform ensures that you use only the most tried and tested methods to back up your critical data. The standard Microsoft SQL Server backup command backs up your data to a local drive, and a regular snapshot is taken to keep an image of your backup drive on S3 storage. The number of these that you keep is up to you - you only pay for what you use.
There are two main causes for the need to invoke a disaster recovery plan. The first is the failure of the operating system, database software or SAP software, whether caused by a bug or a user error. This requires the system to be restored with a working operating system, database software and SAP software. The second is a user error causing data loss leaving the database in an inconsistent state, which requires the database to be restored to a previous point in time. We offer a solution using SQL Server log shipping which keeps one or more standby systems ready to be started up at a moment's notice. For the former case, we would restore the transaction logs from the live server every five minutes, meaning that in case of failure, we would restore the last transaction log, bring the database online, rename the server to replace your existing live server and start SAP. This process should take between 15 and 30 minutes from the time you first report the problem. For the latter case, we would restore the transaction logs from the live server on a delay of your choosing - perhaps 24 hours, or even a week - with the option in case of user error to restore the transaction logs from the live server to any point at five minute intervals for you to retrieve the data deleted by a user. There is no limit to the number of standby servers you can have - you only pay for what you use.
On-premise hardware upgrades are a long, convoluted, complex and expensive procedure, often involving multiple consultants, many test runs of your migration and extensive downtime. By hosting your SAP landscape with us on the AWS platform, a hardware upgrade can be performed in a matter of a few minutes. If your requirements increase from needing a two core server to a forty core server, we can make that change for you at an agreed date and time in a few minutes. Furthermore, your capital expenditure requirements are heavily reduced - we can switch it back for you if your requirements reduce.
There's no need to be nervous about the migration process. The downtime for your production system can be as little as an hour or two. The data from your SAP system will be backed up to your new server on the AWS platform and SAP will be installed in advance. When the installation is complete and all your data has been migrated, we just need to stop your SAP system, copy and restore the tail of the transaction log, perform a system rename and bring SAP back online. What's more, we do all this for you!
We can host your own Solution Manager system on AWS for you too. We can migrate an existing server or build a new one from scratch. Solution Manager is required to keep your SAP system supported and up-to-date. It's important to keep your SAP system up-to-date with the latest supported operating system and database software, in addition to regularly applying enhancement packages and support package stacks, in order to remain in a SAP-supported configuration and to comply with legal requirements for payroll, HR and others. This is a service we offer as part of the deal.
It's important to keep your SAP system patched for security, stability and performance reasons. Windows Updates should be installed on a monthly basis. SQL Server service packs and cumulative updates should be installed as and when they are released. The SAP kernel should be kept up to date. No matter what your hardware platform it's also important to keep the underlying software, drivers and firmware up to date. On the AWS platform, this is as easy as using an up-to-date instance type and installing driver updates when they are released. This is a service we offer as part of the deal.
We check your systems at regular intervals to ensure they are running smoothly. This includes ensuring the system is up and running, checking the metrics in the SAP-standard CCMS monitoring and various other BASIS checks, including table buffers and database performance. This is a service we offer as part of the deal.
